DOVER, Del. - A Former Delaware Psychiatrist has plead guilty to defrauding Medicare. Attorney General Beau Biden, said that Yvette Baker, 53, was charged in July 2011 with defrauding the Delaware Medicaid Program of nearly $175,000. Baker pleaded guilty and was sentenced on Tuesday.
The charges are the result of an investigation by the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit that started in 2010, after authorities allegedly found billing improprieties from Baker, from July 2006 through July 2009 while practicing at the Psychiatric Wellness Center in Dover. She also prescribed unnecessary painkillers, and billed Medicaid.
She pled guilty to 4 felony charges of healthcare fraud and two misdemeanor charges of false representation and making a false statement. Baker was immediately sentenced to 1 year in prison, followed by 7 years of probation. She will also have to pay $273,000 on damages and fines, including $172,000 to the Delaware Medicaid Program.
Officials say that Baker's license to prescribe drugs was suspended in April 2010, and her Delaware medical license was suspended in July 2010.
