SALISBURY, Md. - A more than six million dollar Justice Assistance grant was announced this week, and one local police department will be receiving a piece.
US Maryland Senators Barbara A. Mikulski and Ben Cardin announced that a federal grant in the amount of $6,327,586 was awarded from the US Department of Justice, to be given to municipalities across Maryland. These grants will be used to support public safety activities, reduce violent crime, along with reduce crimes against victims and children.
Locally, the City of Salisbury will be receiving $56,369. WMDT spoke with Major David Meienshein, an administrative commander for the Salisbury Police, about the grant, who says "They're extremely important because we don't. It allows us to free up funding for other needs and without it we would have to let something else go. Not be able to purchase something else, so they're very important."
The department is splitting the grant money with the Wicomico County Sheriffs Office. Along with 6 more mobile data terminals for police cruisers, the department plans on using the money for more SWAT team equipment.
