Job Fair Brings Hope for Delmarva Job Seekers

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - Unemployment may down to 7.8 %, but as we saw in the Presidential Debate, the current state of jobs is still a major concern, and that's no different for Delmarva residents.

Hundreds flocked to the 7th Annual Job Fair at the Centre At Salisbury, hosted by the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce and One-Stop Job Market hoping to score employment.

"I'm just trying to make ends meet, and it's rough, real rough," said Leonard Leach, a former Special Forces officer.  Leach recently moved to Salisbury from North Carolina, where he says the job market was even more scare.

And Elizabeth LaPosta, with a degree in biology, hopes to specialize in phlebotomy, but has been looking for a job for the past 4 months.  She's begun to realize that in the sciences, simply having an undergraduate degree won't get her where she wants to go.

She said "it's just a BS, if you don't go farther along, all you end up doing is teaching."

The job fair has seen everyone from the college graduates looking to jump start their career to people with years of experience who just can't seem to catch a break, but event staff say there were more job opportunities this year than last year, which could be a sign the economy is getting back on track.

Shannon Mitchell, Events Director for the Salisbury Chamber of Commerce said "I think last year we had about 250 positions that needed to be filled from this job fair, right now we're looking at over 350 to 400 positions that are available."

And that's sweet music to the ears of all who turned out.

Layo Moriton, a 19 year-old on a break from college was hopeful, saying "I see it's a lot of opportunities and out here for me -- so -- I'm just gonna start applying away."

Another sign the job market might be bouncing back, some people aren't just looking for any job, they're looking for a better job.

"I have a job, but I want a better job," said Dorron Mills, a student at WorWic Community College, "I'm more for criminal justice or business because I love helping people."

But for others like Leonard Leach, survival is still the most important thing.

"I ain't choicy about no job, as long as it's taking care of the family," Leach told us, "I tried Mountainaire, if I can truck drive for them, if that works out, I'm a be there 'til I retire."

And regardless of who's wins on November 6th -- most Americans agree The President should first take care of the dire economy.
