CRISFIELD, Md. - Investigators want to know how and why an expensive water-craft in Crisfield went up in flames Tuesday night. Whether it's a random or malicious act of arson, someone torched a 36-foot pleasure craft. Now Maryland State Fire Marshals are working to find out who.
"It's not good for the people and it's not good for the economy in that area, to have to worry about somebody running around staring fires on their boats," said Deputy State Fire Marshal, Thomas Harr.
The boat was being stored on David Evans' lot in Crisfield, when it went up in flames. It took under an hour to put out, but the damage is significant. Officials estimate a $125,000 loss.
"Anybody that's gonna gain entry is gonna try and get in the back of the cabin of the boat, and that's where the extent of the damage was done was inside of the boat," said Harr.
Evans says he built that boat, and the other boat owned by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, which was also damaged during the blaze. Unfortunately, he says that too is a total loss.
"Anytime you're dealing with a boat like that it's extensive damage because you have to do so much to repair it to get it to look the same," said Evans.
The owner of the pleasure craft is on an extended vacation in Thailand. Evans says he's been notified, and the owner tells him, he has no idea who could have done this.
