Navy Reopens Va. Landing Field, Runway Upgraded

Posted: Updated:

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP) - The Navy has reopened a landing field in Chesapeake following completion of a $19 million runway project.

Fentress Naval Auxiliary Landing Field was closed for 10 months while the pavement and lighting systems were replaced.

Media outlets report that fighter jet pilots resumed carrier landing practices at Fentress on Tuesday. Navy officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the runway project's completion.

Fentress is an auxiliary to Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach. While it was closed, pilots conducted more day and night practice landings at Oceana. Units also were detached to practice at air facilities in Florida and North Carolina.
