DELAWARE - The U.S. Senate race in Delaware is heating up.
The state's Democratic Party filed a formal complaint with the Federal Elections Commission against Alex Pires. He's the Independent candidate challenging incumbent Tom Carper. The complaint alleges Pires misused staff and resources from several bars, night clubs and restaurants he owns to promote his candidacy.
In response to the accusations, Pires released this statement to us: "(1) Mr. Carper beat his first wife, (2) Mr. Carper beat his second wife, and (3) Mr. Carper repeatedly lies about his military record - Mr. Carper has never set foot in Vietnam, was not and is not a Vietnam Vet, yet brags about having done three tours in Vietnam. In retaliation, he complains to the FEC that I gave three older ladies pieces of chicken from Jimmy's Grill- the best chicken in Delaware."
We reached out to Senator Carper. His campaign staff says Pires' comments are quote "despicable and outrageous." To our knowledge, Senator Carper has never been charged for these allegations.
