SNOW HILL, Md. - Miss Patti Cake's bakery shop opens up downtown and hopes to not only satisfy your sweet tooth, but rev up Snow Hill development with a sugar high.
"The town has been super supportive. Actually, the way we were able to do any of it is through the new mayor, Charlie Dorman. He contacted me after he saw a local newspaper article about the competitions I had been doing and the awards that I won," owner Patti McDermott said. To help make that happen, the town gave her a $20,000 small business loan. "Of course it was a dream of mine, I just really didn't think that it was going to come true as soon as it did. So we were really fortunate and the town has been helping us along the way," she said.
As businesses continue to open up, Snow Hill officials and business owners hope to see this 'sleepy' town come to life. "The past 10 years have been very slow, and we've had the downturn in the economy. Business has come and gone. It looks like there's a new resurgence of young people that really want to get into town like Patti. People are really starting to see that Snow Hill is going to become the hub. Berlin's revitalized, Pocomoke's revitalized, and it's time for Snow Hill," Mayor Charlie Dorman said.
The plan is to spur the economy and motivate surrounding businesses. "It's something that I'm hoping that by us opening early, and just attracting people from all over, more businesses will start to open up early if they see people walking around early in the morning," Patti said. "I'd like to see every store full. And then other than Friday and Saturday nights, I'd like to see somebody in this town walking the streets everyday, all night long. We're getting there piece by piece, as long as we keep filling buildings," Mayor Dorman said.
Miss Patti Cake's grand opening is this Saturday from 10 AM to 7 PM. They plan to stay open through Columbus day. Raffle tickets will be given out with every purchase - the top prize is a $150 gift certificate.
