BERLIN, Md. - Warnings of the meningitis outbreak have hit the shore. Berlin Interventional Pain Management confirms that they did carry the medication that was involved. They tell us that they are in the process of contacting patients that may have been treated with it. However, they say that no illnesses have been reported.
The outbreak has already killed 5 people and sickened as many as 26 others. Three cases have been reported in Virginia and two in Maryland including a death in each of those states. All of those infected with the strain of meningitis received steroid injections for back pain.
Federal health officials have identified the manufacturer and have issued a recall. The Berlin facility says they are complying with the recall and have returned their shipment.
Fungal meningitis is said to be a rare form of the illness. For more information visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website.
