SALISBURY, Md. - The American Cancer Society hit the shore, and now you have an opportunity to help fight the disease that affects so many in our country.
"We have a high incidence of cancer here in Maryland - on the Eastern Shore, the lower Eastern Shore. And as in any research comes education, and certainly enlightenment," Maryland State Senator Jim Mathias said.
At Salisbury University, community leaders announced their search for locals willing to participate in a 20-30 year landmark nationwide study to better understand the cause of cancer. It's called the Cancer Prevention Study 3, also known as CPS-3. This particular study will focus on the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that cause or prevent cancer.
They are looking for men and women ages 30 to 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer to participate. "This is a huge opportunity individually to participate and to be part of a rural region that sometimes is only in a metro area. This is a prime example of how the American Cancer Society in dollars work for us in a local area. They need 300,000 participants nationally and this is our chance to really participate we as many people as we can get," Renee Stephens, a lead champion of the study said.
Enrollment in the study takes place at Salisbury University and Peninsula Regional Medical Center from November 7-10. You'll be asked to provide a waist measurement, give a blood sample and complete a comprehensive survey and follow-up surveys every few years.
