Delaware Bucks Trend In Higher-Ed Research Funding

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Delaware appears to be an outlier in a new report warning that the mission of America's 101 major public research universities is imperiled by budget cuts.

The report published Tuesday by the National Science Board, which oversees the National Science Foundation, says state support for public research universities fell an average of 20 percent between 2002 and 2010, after accounting for inflation and increased enrollment.

But researchers said Delaware actually increased its per-student funding for the University of Delaware by an inflation-adjusted 1 percent during that time. Delaware was one of only seven states that did not experience a decline in per-student funding.

Researchers say enrollment at UD increased by 1 percent during the period, while state appropriations increased two percent.
