HARBESON, Del. - Punkin Chunkin is not just about launching pumpkins. As organizers say: it's also about the kids.
This year, the World Championship of Punkin Chunkin awarded $50,000 worth of scholarship money to 27 students. All this money was raised from last year's profits. Event organizers are hoping to beat that number this year.
"We would like to increase it. We've been very blessed that we've been able to increase it almost every year," said Frank Shade, director of media and promotions. "Even if we increase by a couple hundred dollars, we'll have another scholarship to give away."
Scholarships are awarded through a point-based application process. If you volunteer at the World Championships or are a "punkin chunker," you will receive more points. If you qualify, you are eligible to receive between $1,000 to $3,000.
