WASHINGTON, DC - A giant panda cub, born just a week ago at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington DC has died.
Veterinarians examined the cub Sunday morning after zookeepers and volunteers heard a "distress vocalization" from the young panda's mother. The zoo said the cub did not respond to CPR or other life-saving measures.
Giant pandas are on the endangered species list, with only 236 in captivity and between 1,500 and 3,000 in the wild.
