Lincoln's Cottage Displays Copy of Emancipation

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Lincoln's Cottage is displaying a rare, signed copy of the Emancipation Proclamation to mark the 150th anniversary of the order to freeing slaves during the Civil War.

Lincoln contemplated and drafted much of the document at the cottage in Washington where he spent much of his presidency.

On Saturday, the historic house became the first public venue to display this document that was recently purchased by businessman David Rubenstein. The display marks the anniversary Saturday of Lincoln's preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, warning he would free Southern slaves. The document will be on view through February 2013.

Rubenstein, the managing director of The Carlyle Group investment firm, purchased the document at auction in June for $2.1 million. Lincoln signed 48 copies to be sold to fund medical care for Union soldiers.
