Delaware Unemployment Ticks Higher For 2nd Month

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Delaware's unemployment rate has risen for the second straight month in August but still remains below the national jobless rate.

The News Journal (http://delonline.us/VoDvld ) reports the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 6.9 percent in August. That's up from 6.8 percent in July.

A report Friday by the state's Department of Labor shows the unemployment rate is down from 7.4 percent a year ago.

George Sharpley, a senior economist for the state, says Delaware is still better off than it was in 2011 and is outperforming neighboring states New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Within Delaware, Wilmington continues to have the highest unemployment rate at 10.8 percent. That's up from 10.6 percent in July. Sussex County has the lowest unemployment rate at 6 percent.
