Happy Birthday To The Smiley Face Emoticon

WMDT 47 NEWS - September 19, 2012 is the 30th anniversary of the smiley face emoticon. The "sideways smiley face" was created in 1992 by Scott E. Fahlman after he realized things like facial expressions and tone-of-voice didn't translate well during text-based communication.

Fahlman says he is also the father of the frowning face emoticon, but takes no ownership of others like the winking and kissing face.
