GEORGETOWN, Del. - What do beer, Rehoboth Beach chefs, and Meals on Wheels have in common? On the evening of September, 19th, WMDT went out to 16 Mile Brewery in Georgetown, Delaware for a sizzling hot fundraiser that earns money for a struggling non-profit that benefits our seniors.
Here's how it works: Three local chefs are given one basket full of four mystery ingredients, and they only have 30 minutes to cook up one delicious dish for three judges.
"They bring a pantry of their basic ingredients and then, they have to incorporate all four of the basket ingredients into their dish," said Meghan Gardner, Co-Owner of The Blue Moon Restaurant and a committee member of the Celebrity Chef's Beach Brunch.
The mystery ingredients - lima beans, apples, chicken, and scrapple - were held in a freezer until the last minute.
While the event was definitely a good time, full of good food and good drinks right from 16 Mile Brewery, no one forgot the real reason they were there.
Danielle Panarello, Director of Operations and pastry chef at Eaton Restaurant, said "the last event raised enough money to provide 300 meals to residents that can't get out on their own" and they're hoping to raise just as much this time around. Tickets for this event were $25 per person.
According to event organizers, 60% percent of the money raised by Meals on Wheels Delaware goes back to providing food for people in Sussex County.
The winner of tonight's challenge will go on to compete against the champion of the 1st Chef's Throwdown in October at the Celebrity Chefs' Beach Brunch in Dewey Beach.
