Fmr. OC City Manager Running For City Council

Posted: Updated:

OCEAN CITY, Md. - A year later, many Ocean City residents are still talking about the firing of  Dennis Dare.  But now those same people have more to talk about.

Dennis Dare, the former city manager, announced his candidacy for Ocean City city council in front of over 50 supporters, including current city council members and the mayor.

"I kind of made the decision about six weeks ago that I was going to do it," said Dare.  "I kind of sat on it to make sure I'm doing it for all the right reasons."

He talked about his candidacy, his present and future  But his past still remained evident.   "A lot has changed during that time," said Dare.

Mary Knight, a city council member who is up for re-election said that she would "be proud to sit up there with Dennis Dare.  He brings a lot of good knowledge to the town.  I think he was wrongly and I'll use the word 'fired.'"

Last September, the council voted 4 to 3 to remove Dare from his nearly 22-year position as city manager.  Among the votes against him was council member Joe Hall.  He and other council members says the decision came down to the Dare direction of the city; according to Hall the budget nearly doubled from $76 million to $121 million from 1998 to 2008.

"We can't have a high growth government and economy that really survives on 70 productive days of the year."

For Dare, again working for the city doesn't come down to a council vote.

It comes down to the voters, as Mayor Rick Meehan said that he hopes "they remember the 29 years of good service and I hope they also remembered what happened."
