Organization Serving People With Disabilities Opens New Center

Posted: Updated:

MILLSBORO, Del. - A Delaware organization that helps people with disabilities has opened a new facility in Sussex County.

"This is by far the most rewarding position I've ever had in my life," said Steve Parris, work coordinator for Chimes.

Steve Parris already enjoys his job at Chimes, but now he's even more excited to head into work.

"The move into the new building created such a moral boost, not only for staff but for consumers as well."

The organization recently opened a new center in Millsboro, a step up in size from their previous building.  Chimes says that's how much the new building costs $1.8 million to build.  It can now hold up to 70 people with disabilities; more if you include staff. The people now have more rooms, one of which is to help stimulate and relax motor sensors.

Another is a room specifically designed for people with disabilities to work.  They put together treasure chest items together and get paid per units put together. The main goal is to help the Chimes consumers to find work.

"I get calls periodically from employers looking for folks to come work for them, which is how we got the jobs in Rehoboth Beach, they called us," said Parris.

By sending people with disabilities out to different jobs - sometimes full-time employment -  to Chimes hopes to help them socialize and gain valuable work experience.  One worker, Daniel Hanlon, has many jobs, one of which is to help a local town clean-up.

"Georgetown is harder to do.  I take care of the bathrooms and vacuum every night.  I have to vacuum again.  It's fun!," said Hanlon.
