Delmar High Students
DELAWARE - There's a big push to buy and eat local produce, and now thousands of kids all across Delaware are taking a bite into locally-grown fruit with their lunches this week.
Delaware's Farm to School program officially marked Wednesday, 'Watermelon Wednesday." It's an initiative to get local foods into schools, increase healthy eating opportunities and students' awareness of agriculture.
"I think it's good that you know that there's farms around here, that everything doesn't come from China and other places. And it also supports the economy buying from local farms and that kind of thing. Also, I know watermelon is really healthy, which I know a big problem is that a lot of kids aren't getting the nutrients they need.," Nathaniel Vincent of Vincent Farms said. "It kind of introduces them to agriculture and they can learn about the watermelon process," Jonah Vincent of Vincent Farms said.
Eight different Delaware farms supplied the watermelon for the statewide event. Delmar High School served over 400 half-cup portions of watermelon.
