WILMINGTON, Del. - Democratic U.S. Sen. Tom Carper has easily won a primary contest against a little-known political newcomer.
Carper, a former two-term governor, state treasurer and congressman, is seeking his third term in the Senate.
He will face Republican Kevin Wade, a northern Delaware businessman, and Independent Alex Pires Jr., a wealthy lawyer and Dewey Beach businessman, in November.
With 11 percent of precincts reporting Tuesday, Carper had 3,574 votes, compared to 505 for challenger Keith Spanarelli.
Spanarelli is a Smyrna businessman who was making his first bid for political office.
