GEORGETOWN, Del. - A late morning accident involving a Laurel Police car shut down West Market Street for three hours Tuesday. The crash happened in front of the Georgetown Medical Center. WMDT's Jemie Lee was on the scene and says the Police car hit a Verizon telephone pole, knocking it down.
West Market Street was temporarily shut down between Route 113 and School Lane until about 2 PM. The officer involved walked away without sustaining injuries, but was taken to Nanticoke hospital as a precaution.
Crews have replaced the damaged pole. Officials say no lines were damaged, so customers should not have lost any service during this time.
A fire hydrant that was also hit, needs to be replaced.
Valerie Snyder was working at the Sussex Eye Center across the street at the time of the incident. "I was just sitting in the office and I saw the telephone pole lines - I saw them coming down, and I heard a big loud bang. By the time I came out, I saw the police car where it was at, and it was full of smoke. It started down by the mailboxes - that was where it actually started. He came up on the curb and kind of did a 180 there," she said.
Officials have collected a statement from the Laurel officer who was on his way to court at the time of the accident. The investigation is ongoing.
