DOVER, Del. - September 11th is a day we will never forget. It's that tragic moment in history, 11 years ago, that claimed more lives than we had imagined and sparked a war that sent so many brave men and women fighting for what they believe. However, today we honor them.
"Our national slogan is 'never again will one generation of veterans abandon another' so our focus has really been an outreach to our current veterans, and that has helped them to be welcomed back as well," said Dave Skocik, President of the Delaware Veterans Coalition.
WMDT was there as the Vietnam Veterans, Kent County Chapter 850 broke ground for the creation of the first ever Gold Star Memorial in Delaware. A tribute to the families of those that were killed.
"A sister, brother or father suffers that same loss and we want to make sure that those people are honored also," said Paul Davis, Delaware State President for Vietnam Veterans of America.
For $100, families can purchase a brick, which will complete the circle surrounding the Vietnam Memorial in Dover. "We decided to indent this one and I call it closer to our hearts," said Skocik.
They need $9,500 to finish the memorial, and they're about half way there.
"We're going to build this, have it completed, honor all the past wars that we've had and I would like to be able to say I hope we never have anymore," said Davis.

Those who contribute by September 15th, will have their bricks in place for the unveiling of the memorial, on Veterans Day. That event is scheduled for November 12th at 2 p.m.
