DOVER, Del. (AP) - The most closely watched contests in Tuesday's Delaware primary elections are two local races. The winners of the Democratic primaries for mayor of Wilmington and chief executive of New Castle County, both Democratic strongholds, are expected to easily win the November general election.
For Wilmington voters, violent crime is a key issue. The city is on pace to break its homicide record and was recently ranked by Parenting magazine as one of America's most dangerous cities. Tuesday's election also includes several legislative contests and a four-way Democratic primary for state insurance commissioner.
Democratic U.S. Sen. Tom Carper is expected to easily win his primary against a political newcomer, while New Castle County council president and former state representative Tom Kovach is expected to win the GOP primary for U.S. House.
