SALISBURY, Md. - Danielle Cannon has had enough with Carvel Gardens, and she's packing up and moving out.
"I was going to the dumpster and I got approached by two people that I don't even know because I don't really know anybody out here. And it's just too much. I figured the curfew would work, but I guess obviously it didn't work. I ran to my car and got in, and ran off. I mean, I was scared," she said.
Back in February, the town of Laurel issued an emergency curfew after weeks of violence and criminal activity. Non-residents were not permitted on the property between 10 PM and 6 AM. And it apparently worked - in May, police saw a 64% drop in calls for servicing in the area. But the curfew now expires, and Laurel's Mayor John Schwed says they can't extend it because it's supposed to be used as an emergency measure.
"I've had enough. I mean, it has been better, I can't say it hasn't but, this one episode made me think maybe it hasn't.I have my two boys - babies. And it's just not where I want my kids to grow up at. I don't even let my kids outside - I've been here over 2 and a half years and my kids never played out here a day in their life," she said.
Officials are now working with Carvel Gardens management to see if there's anything they can do on their end - whether it's putting up no trespassing signs, or coming up with a set of rules. Bottom line, they continue to look for ways to make it safer for residents.
