REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. - The beach town, which is known for being a summer hotspot might now be known for it's highway accidents involving pedestrians.
A fatal crash happened on the Coastal Highway near Route 24 and two pedestrians were pronounced dead at the scene. Officials are currently investigating the incident, but this isn't the first time a crash involving pedestrians happened in this area.
In June, a bicyclist was air-lifted after a pick-up truck struck her. She was traveling on the shoulder; the two pedestrians were not walking in a crosswalk.
Still, local residents are cautious when traveling near vehicles.
"It's nerve wrecking. You hear them coming and get a little wobbly," said Kaitlin Pearse, a local bicyclist. "We probably should be wearing helmets but we wanted to go on a casual ride."
Coastal Highway isn't the only heavily congested area in Rehoboth Beach where bicyclists and pedestrians must stay alert.
On the boardwalk, a young child was nearly hit by a motorist. Then his parents cautiously told him to hold onto a "child leash" attached to a stroller.
"I stopped. I didn't know how it was coming so I had to stop," said child Peyton Kott.
But the holidays are no different than any day of the year. Riders and pedestrians must err on the side of caution, look both ways and walk on crosswalks.
Del-Dot is attempting to make Rehoboth Beach and other Delaware roads a safer place for cyclists. Earlier this year, the department of transportation set up checkpoints on the Eastern Shore, installing safety equipment on bikes and fitting cyclists for helmets.
