CAMBRIDGE, Md. - A manhunt is now underway for a fugitive who slipped away from Cambridge police. Catching him is a top priority since he's believed to be armed and dangerous.
22-year-old Lorenzo Jones made a brazen escape, while still in handcuffs, during a bond hearing at the commissioner's office in Cambridge. Police say Jones had just found out he was going to spend more time behind bars, but saw an opportunity. When the officer turned his back, Jones allegedly went running right out the back door.
"Some days we get them, some days we don't. This was his day, he did not want to be put back in jail so this is the action he took," said Lt. Mark Lewis. @
Just hours before his escape, police were called to the Best Value Inn in Cambridge for alleged drug use. When they got there, investigators found marijuana, a weighing scale, and a loaded handgun. Jones and 27-year-old Sarah Rorrer were both arrested. Rorrer now sits behind bars.
"I didn't even know that," said a local resident.
Neighbors caught wind of what happened and were shocked to hear he was in trouble. However, for the past four years, Jones has been in and out of jail for drug possession. Because of his criminal background, the Dorchester County State's Attorney's office plans to seek the maximum penalty.
"The fact that this guy was able to slip away from their custody is but a bump in the road. He'll be back in custody and we'll prosecute him," said state's attorney, William Jones.
Once Jones is caught, he could face eight years behind bars, and that's not including the time he could face for violating parole. As for the officer, police say there could be disciplinary action if they find he did something which facilitated the escape.
