CORDOVA, Md. - Flash flooding from Sunday night's severe weather put most of Talbot County under water. Easton saw a lot of rain, but it was Cordova which saw most of the damage.
"Oh my god where did the road go," said a local resident once he saw the aftermath outside of his home.
About 8 to 12 inches of intense rainfall over a few hours, was all it took for Church Lane to split in half. Officials say the creek, that runs under the road, usually has about 18 inches of water but had a buildup of about 25 feet. That ultimately caused the road to cave in creating a major washout.
"We blocked both sides of the road as best as we could. As long as it kept people out of harms way that's the main thing," said the resident.
Talbot County Emergency Services Director, Clay Stamp, says the heavy rain dumping into the tributaries and high tide was all a recipe for disaster.
"We had about 70 9-1-1 calls in a matter of just a few hours and many of them had to do with people stuck in their cars in flooded areas, and they were trapped on their vehicle," he said.
Almost one year ago, there was a similar scene, following the wrath of Hurricane Irene. There was a car fully submerged in water at the Comfort Inn Hotel.
In Delaware, lightning sparked over 16 fires. The American Red Cross has already stepped in to assist 11 people with food and shelter, and are preparing for any other possible disasters. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries. Officials say they have no serious property damage to report, mainly because they say most people report damages directly to their insurance companies.
