UPDATE: Identity Of Escaped Inmate Shot By Police Released

Posted: Updated:

CENTREVILLE, Md. - The escaped inmate that was shot and killed by police in Centerville, on Wednesday evening, has been identified.

Maryland State Police say just before 6:00 PM they received a report that an inmate, 25-year-old Michael J. Schluderberg, had walked off from a pre-release security facility during a check by officers. That facility is located on Flat Iron Square Road in Church Hill, Md.

At around 7:30 PM, Queen Anne's County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a home on the 600 block of Carvel Place Road in Centreville for a reported burglary. The homeowner told deputies he had just returned home and found that several items had been taken including a loaded handgun, several magazines of ammunition, a blue bag and other items.

Deputies then began a search for the burglary suspect, who was later identified as the escaped inmate, Schluderberg. Authorities say they spotted a male carrying a blue bag, just off the shoulder of Route 301. Schluderberg allegedly fired shots after deputies and state troopers tried to confront him, police fired back until he reportedly took off running.

Police say the suspect was not hit and began running through a soybean field toward a farm. The owner of the farm heard the shots and armed himself with a handgun and confronted Schluderberg as he came out of the bean field, according to police. Police say the farmer told them that the suspect had a knife when he emerged from the field, but dropped it when he saw the farmer.

Moments later, an officer from the Centreville Police Department arrived at the farm and attempted to convince Schluderberg to surrender. He repeatedly refused to surrender. According to the preliminary investigation, he repeatedly told the officer and the farmer he was not going back to jail and they would have to kill him.

Police say Schluderberg then reached behind him in a threatening manner as if he was trying to pull something from his waistband, and that is when the officer shot the suspect.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. No police officers were injured during the incident.

MSP Crime Lab Technicians and investigators from the Queen Anne's County Sheriff's Office spent last night combing the expansive area that these incidents took place. They reportedly found a handgun, believed to be the one stolen from Carvel Place Road, in the bean field, a knife on the farm, and an apparent suicide note near Schluderberg's body.

They say that Schluderberg's was serving a three-year sentence in state prison for assault, and was housed at the Eastern Pre-Release Unit in Church Hill.
