
LEWES, Del. - A fatal crash that closed the roadway for over three hours in Lewes is under investigation.
The incident happened Monday night around 8:20 p.m. on Coastal Highway (SR1). Police say 28-year-old Michael Johnson was driving a 2009 Suzuki motorcycle northbound on Coastal Highway. That's when police say a 17-year-old female, driving a 1998 Saturn, was crossing over the northbound lanes and attempting to turn into the Bay Crossing Development. However after stopping, she allegedly entered the northbound lanes directly into the path of the motorcycle. Police say the motorcycle was unable to avoid the car and as a result, struck the right side of the Saturn.
Michael Johnson and his brother, Jeffrey Johnson who was a passenger, were thrown forward and landed in the northbound lanes. The two reportedly were both wearing helmets were transported to Beebe Medical Center in Lewes. Police say Michael was died shortly after arrival. Authorities say Jeffrey was later flown to Christiana Hospital with serious injuries.
Police say the teen driver of the Saturn and a 29-year-old passenger, who were properly restrained, refused medical treatment at the scene of the crash.
The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating the crash.
