BERLIN, Md. - A trusted employee was arrested after allegedly stealing over $400,000 from the Worcester County Teacher's Association. The Worcester County Bureau of Investigations has been investigating this case since February.

Denise Owens, 58, of Berlin, was the treasurer between 2006 and 2009, and reportedly had full access to all the bank accounts. The investigation revealed that Owens wrote unauthorized checks to herself and others, along with making unauthorized withdrawals from the account.

Early in 2009, a forensic audit of the Association's fund revealed that the account was missing $433,784.52. An attorney for the association in Annapolis and Owens agreed to have her begin paying it back, without notifying authorities.

Owens was arrested on August 3rd, and charged with theft scheme over $500 and two counts of theft $500 plus.
