LEWES, Del. - A local floating landmark is on its way home. The Kalmar Nyckel, Tall Ship of Delaware has set sail, making its journey from Massachusetts back to Lewes. The Kalmar Nyckel is replica 17th Century Dutch vessel, just like the tall ships that brought the earliest settlers to Delaware.
It is expected to be back in port on August 9th, and be ready to take the public out on August 11th. Public sails will continue through September 9th. Free tour dates are August 19th, September 2nd, and September 3rd from 3 - 6 PM. Tickets cost $60 for adults and $40 for children 17 and under. There are two types of trips that visitors can take, either an evening sail or a special pirate sail, which is very popular with children.
If you would rather volunteer on the boat, no sailing experience is necessary, and the experience is open to those aged 18 - 75+, those 14-17 can volunteer with a parent. Volunteers must graduate from a 2 and a half week class to learn to sail the ship. If you are interested you can email Captain Sharon at CaptainSharon@kalmarnyckel.org.
For public sail tickets and more information contact the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation office at (302) 429-7447 or visit their website.
