HARRINGTON, Del. - A local group supports a Delaware man competing in the National Veterans Wheelchair Games.
Larry Binger has been competing in the wheelchair games for more than 20 years. This past June, he brought home a gold medal in bowling and bronze in trap shooting. Next summer, he competes with nearly 100 archers. Representing Delaware, he's aiming to bring home the gold.
The Mid-Del Archers Club in Harrington stands behind him. They hosted an archery benefit shoot on Sunday to help him raise funds for the 33rd annual event next July. "He's a very driven individual. He doesn't let his handicap hold him back. He has no excuses. He just tries to achieve. He has his goals and he knows where he wants to go with them," archer Clyde Bragg said.
In 2008, Binger was honored by Congress for his volunteer efforts with veterans and for excellence in wheelchair sports. "It's the nicest honor I've ever had. Of all the things I've ever won, to be recognized by your state, the congressman and the U.S. Congress, it's really an amazing award," he said.
Although he thrives off the competition, there's a drive that goes far beyond any recognition. "It's not the competition that I really care about. It's being around my fellow veterans - especially the newly injured ones. It's encouraging and showing them that it doesn't matter what your disability is. You don't have to quit what you're doing. You can do sports and you can go back to life. You can work, you can do anything," he said.
July 12, Larry heads to Tampa, Florida and plans to compete in bowling, trap shooting and archery events. He needs to raise more than $2000 to cover airfare, hotel fees, training costs and other expenses. To sponsor him, call 302-368-5651.
