SALISBURY, MD- Friday afternoon, a dump truck accident caused major traffic congestion on the Salisbury Bypass. Mark Schaffer, a driver from KTBS Trucking & Excavation lost control of his vehicle when his front right tire "blew-out."
Schaffer was driving east-bound on the Salisbury Bypass near Northwood Drive when his tire blew. His vehicle then struck a guard rail and then a nearby pole. According to Salisbury Fire Department, the pole kept the vehicle from tumbling down an seventy foot embankment.
Luckily, Schaffer was not seriously injured in the accident.
The eastbound lane of the Salisbury Bypass was closed for most of Friday afternoon. A portion of the guard rail was wrapped around the front axel of the truck.
Bryan Records, Assistant Fire Chief of the Salisbury Fire Department was present on the scene, "We used a cutting torch to cut the guard rail in three places and now its been released and the two tow trucks have him off the roadway. He's carrying a full load of sand, the 70 foot drop from the roadway to the base, once he went off the side, that load would have shifted, I have no doubt he would have been dead.
An official from KTBS Trucking & Excavation told WMDT that the dump truck is at least a 50,000 dollar loss.
