SALISBURY, Md. - With the start of school in Maryland just weeks away, the NAACP hosted a rally Thursday afternoon to make sure all students are prepared.
This annual event at Salisbury Middle School provides students and parents with information and school supplies. Community leaders came together with student performers to get kids motivated to start the year off right.
"It's just a way of providing them with supplies," explains the Wicomico County NAACP President, "but also getting them pumped up and just excited about going to school."
Wyzhir Johnson, whose family was recently featured on ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, served as the guest speaker. Johnson talked about overcoming hardships following the loss of his hand while trying to help repair his family's home one Christmas Eve. He also talked about the importance of self encouragement.
Every year the event provides school supplies for at least 300 Wicomico County students. This year they were able to hand out a total of 541 bags of school supplies!
