TRAPPE, Md. - An outpouring of support and thousands of dollars in donations, all to make a young boy with cerebral palsy smile a bit brighter. 8-year-old Elijah Palmer couldn't hold back the excitement. His hopes of getting a wheelchair accessible van are finally fulfilled.
"I love the van. It was my favorite color," said Elijah.
The blue van sparkles like a gem, and cost as much as one too. The community was a big help in getting the family close to their $17,000 goal. However, it was Leslie Westbrook, a stranger with a big heart, that donated the remainder to reach it.
"She called me on Wednesday and was like 'are you ready to get your van?' I was like yea! It shocked me because I didn't think it was going to happen this soon," said Gloria Palmer, Elijah's mother.
Trappe Police Chief George Ball even stopped by to congratulate the family. It doesn't end there.
"For my next fundraiser I'm gonna get a race car," said Elijah.
It's wishful thinking, but what the Palmer Family really needs now is a ramp. It will stretch from one side of the house to the sidewalk, and they've already started saving money to do it.
"When it's my turn to pay it forward I will do the same for somebody else," said Gloria.
Gloria Palmer tells WMDT that a contractor is coming out on Saturday to discuss constructing the ramp. We will continue to update you on their progress.
