UPDATE: Confirmed Fatal Accident On Route 50

Posted: Updated:

CAMBRIDGE, Md. - Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal car crash that closed a roadway for 5 hours.

Police say it happened around 2:53 p.m. on Thursday on U.S. Route 50. A tanker truck was sitting in the median waiting to cross into the westbound lane. However, police say it had not fully cleared both eastbound lanes and was still partially blocking one of the lanes.

Authorities say 64-year-old Geraldine Wanex, of East New Market, was traveling eastbound and hit the rear of the truck. Wanex was trapped inside the vehicle and was later pronounced dead at the scene. A 20-year-old passenger in Wanex's car was taken to Peninsula Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

Police say the driver of the truck, who was identified as 40-year-old Santo Jones of Cambridge, refused any medical attention at the scene.
