OCEAN CITY, Md. - An attempted traffic stop in Ocean City leads to the arrest of a wanted fugitive from Pennsylvania. But not before a shocking vehicle pursuit through the city, where the brazen fugitive allegedly drove up onto the Ocean City boardwalk to get away from police, on a busy summer weekend.
Tourists admit it's hard to believe. "I think it's crazy," Jonathan Smith exclaims, "with small kids and families out here."
"Yeah, it's kind of scary," concerned mother, Jamin Flannery, tells WMDT.
"I've been coming here for a while, so I do kind of expect to hear these kind of tales," explains James Flannery, Jamin's husband. "It's definitely something you got to think about as a parent."
Police say at about 6:30am Saturday morning, police attempted to pull over 22-year-old Jimmy Anderson of New Park, PA for a seat belt violation on the 10 block of 3rd Street. But the situation took a dangerous turn, when instead of stopping, Anderson reportedly continued to drive his car right up onto the boardwalk. He turned north and continued 4 and a half blocks. At Surf Avenue, police say Anderson turned off the boardwalk, and that's when 3 passengers bailed out of the car.
Police reports show Anderson kept driving and found his way back onto the boardwalk at 16th street, but quickly left it again at 17th street, hitting this median on Baltimore Avenue. Police followed him roughly 20 blocks through the city to Marlin Drive near the bay.
The pursuit ended at a house near the end of Marlin Drive where Anderson reportedly drove his car through a fence, into a backyard, stopping just short of the canal. That's when police say he jumped out of the car, into the canal, and tried to swim away. Police took Anderson into custody on the other side of the canal on 21st Street and Herring Way.
Police found out the car Anderson was driving had been reported stolen during a burglary in York, Pennsylvania and that Anderson himself is a wanted fugitive in that state. Police say they also found drugs on Anderson and one of the passengers who bailed from the car, 30 year-old Aaron Canterbury. Canterbury was charged and released. Anderson is still being held without bond.
