OCEAN CITY, Md. - A man is behind bars after a police chase reportedly led to the recovery of a stolen car on Saturday. Ocean City Police report that they tried to pull over a Dodge Magnum, on 3rd Street near the Boardwalk, around 6:30 AM, but the station wagon fled by turning onto the Boardwalk and driving North.
They say that people on the Boardwalk had to move out of the path of the station wagon to avoid getting hit. Police say that officers followed on the street, and behind on the boardwalk, and at one point the three passengers jumped out of the car, and police were able to detain them. The station wagon reportedly continued North, going onto the boardwalk another time, then hit a median on Baltimore Avenue.
Police say that the station wagon finally came to a stop after driving through a fence of a residence, and couldn't drive any further because of the canal. They say the driver, Jimmy Anderson, 22, of Pennsylvania, jumped into the canal and began to swim, until he reached a dock where officers were waiting to take him into custody.
An investigation showed that Anderson was a wanted fugitive from Pennsylvania and the station wagon had been stolen during a burglary in York, PA. Police also reportedly found suspected marijuana and prescription drugs on Anderson, and more controlled dangerous substances in the station wagon. Anderson was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, malicious destruction of property over $500, 2nd degree escape, more than 30 traffic violations, and other related offenses. He is being held without bond.
One of the three passengers, Aaron Canterbury, 30, of Pennsylvania, was arrested and charged after police reportedly found marijuana, ecstasy, and CDS on him. He was later released.
