HARRINGTON, Del. - Fairgoers beat the heat on Thursday. It was definitely a scorcher out there, but it didn't keep hundreds like Ed Jolly from coming out for Senior's Day.
He drove up from Ocean Pines, Maryland for a day of fun with his wife and they had a full itinerary. The 78-year-old also had a message for other seniors who might think the fair is just for the kids. Jolly says "we are gonna see exhibits, craft shows and visit the barns. I like the rabbits and pigeons and birds like that, the fair is for everybody. They have things for kids and adults."
And in this extreme heat it is very important to look out for the elderly especially when they're going to be walking around the fairgrounds. Health experts say hot weather can take a toll on seniors and also kids. So nurses at the first aid station here at the fair, say if you're with someone who is sweating a lot and feeling weak or nauseous come in and see them immediately.
Helen Maloney, Bayhealth RN, says "we have beds come down and rest we have chairs. We have fluids too water." By the way, the first aid station is located next the M&T Bank Grandstand, and of course they have everything needed to treat cuts, scrapes, and bruises.
