LAUREL, Del. - Police are investigating a crash that left one Laurel man hospitalized and caused damage at a local graveyard.
Police say Albert Brittingham lost control late Saturday night and drove his car into the Odd Fellows Cemetery. The car then flipped over and went up in flames. Crews quickly responded, pulling Brittingham from the vehicle.
He was cited by troopers and is recovering from non-life threatening injuries. Estimates of the damage to the grave sites are unknown.
Witnesses of the crash spoke with WMDT, recalling what they saw. "I had taken the dogs for a walk and it was about 10 minutes after I left the cemetery, I heard an explosion and I thought it was a transformer that blew up," says Laurel resident Tom Fasold.
Local Torey Truitt recalled the chaos immediately following the crash, "There were pieces of the car everywhere...the car door was over here on the sidewalk, it was pretty amazing that he made it out."
Jerry Lynch, member of the Odd Fellow Cemetery spoke about how the crash has affected some of the cemetery's history, "The shame of it is that some of these old stones out there are really old. Some are over 100 years old. They are broken and I don't know if they can repair these."
