OCEAN CITY, Md. - Stemming from a recent incident, Ocean City authorities are warning residents and visitors about swimming safely.
It all happened on Friday, July 20, around 6 PM. Authorities responded to a call for swimmers in distress at 90th Street and the beach. Ocean City Police, Ocean City Fire, Ocean City Beach Patrol and Ocean City Emergency Services all responded to the scene. Three people had to be pulled from the water, one of which was rescued by an off-duty beach patrol employee. The condition of the victims is unknown at this time.
City officials are urging beachgoers to use caution in the water and advise not to swim while the Beach Patrol is off-duty. WMDT spoke with Captain Butch Arbin of the OCMD Beach Partol who said "keep your feet in the sand until the lifeguard is in the stand. Never Swim without the beach patrol. Every year. People die in this ocean because they choose to swim before lifeguards are on duty at 10 o'clock or after we get off duty at 5:30 PM."
