CAMBRIDGE, Md. - Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire that broke out overnight at the Department of Public Works in Cambridge. They also tell us, the fire is suspicious.
"State Fire Marshals office was called immediately at this time it's suspicious, undetermined, under investigation," Chief Bob Phillips of the Rescue Fire Company tells WMDT.
Chief Bob Phillips says they were called to the 700 block of Leonards Lane around 11:35 PM Wednesday. When fire officials arrived on scene they say two buildings were engulfed in flames. Chief Phillips says one of the buildings was used for planning and zoning, building permits and the administrative office. The second building was used as offices for the inspectors and city engineers.
Crews worked up until early Thursday morning to clean up the scene. Officials say both buildings have extensive fire and water damage.
"Neither building is going to be used again," says Chief Phillips. The damages are estimated at $400,000.
Six fire crews worked to get the fire under control including the Cambridge Rescue Fire Company, Oxford Volunteer Fire Company, Trappe Volunteer Fire Company, East New Market Volunteer Fire Department, Secretary Volunteer Fire Department, Hurlock Volunteer Fire Department and Linkwood-Salem Volunteer Fire Company. Officials say that it took 37 firefighters an hour and 15 minutes to control the fire.
As a result of the blaze, officials say one firefighter had to be transported from the scene with non-life threatening injuries. The female fire fighter from Hurlock has since been treated and released.
As for the Department of Public Works, most documents have been recovered. They say 15 staff members have been displaced. The field crew has not been effected. They also say that services will be limited for the next few days. If you do need to contact them, call the city of Cambridge at 410-228-4020. Also keep an eye on their website, they will post direct numbers for each staff member at their new location.
Officials say the cause of the fire is under investigation by the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office. Anyone with information is asked to call the Salisbury office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office at 410-713-3780.
