Soldier Gets A Surprise Homecoming

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - A local soldier got a homecoming surprise Wednesday at the Salisbury Airport.

Airman First Class Curtis Scott got a hero's welcome from family, friends and Operation We Care. Scott said, "I was very shocked that they were here. I was not expecting it at all and I'm very happy they came."

The 23-year-old from Laurel, Delaware is back from San Antonio, Texas, where he graduated from the Military Police Security Tech School at Lackland Air Force Base. He will be home for 22 days before his first deployment to Afghanistan with the USAF 820th Base Defense Group in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

His parents, Terry Scott and Kerrie Kennard, admit they're nervous about what their son will face overseas, but said they are going to make the most of the next few weeks. "It was really hard for me to let my son go, but I know this is the right thing for him," said Kennard. Scott added, "Curtis is not my young boy anymore, he's a man and he stands on his own. I'm very proud of him."

Scott's proud parents had a hand in the surprise homecoming, but it was mostly arranged by Operation We Care, a non-profit best known for reaching out to our troops. Jeff Merritt, director of the Eastern Shore Chapter, said "anything we can do to raise their morale is a good thing and also by doing this we show support for family members. They're not the only ones concerned about their loved one that's being deployed or already serving overseas."

After his surprise at the airport, Scott, his family and Operation We Care members headed to a welcome home party at Grotto's Pizza in Seaford.
