TRAPPE, Md. - A remarkable young boy is living life to the fullest despite his life-long disability. Elijah Palmer is a bright kid with big dreams.
"I want to be a race car driver or a train driver," he said.
The 8-year-old was born four months early, and weighed less than two pounds. He was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy which most would consider a challenge, but Elijah sees far beyond his limitations.
"He's a fighter, he's strong and he's making it through," said his mother, Gloria Palmer.
"He's very creative in finding things he can do on his own so he is very independent," said his dad, Thomas Palmer.
One thing that would make life a little easier for he and his family is a wheelchair accessible van.
"We don't have a ramp so I lift him up put him in the car, lift him up again, take him back out of the car, and back into the house," said Gloria.
Despite their daily struggle, this selfless family always puts others first. Two years ago, Elijah donated money right from his piggy bank, so the Trappe Police Department could participate in the Special Olympics. Now the chief wants to pay it forward.
"Were trying to come back and assist his family with the needs they have and its just a tremendous outpouring from the community," said Chief George Ball.
One of many dreams of Elijah's that could come true. The Palmer Family needs $5,800 for the van. So far, they've raised about $4,000 through an online campaign, and we hear someone will match 50 percent of the money donated on that website, through Friday. To donate, just head to http://www.indiegogo.com/fortheloveofelijah.
You can also help the Palmer family out at their community yard sale this Saturday at Easton Elementary from 7:30 A-M to 11:00. You can donate an item to be used in the yard sale, from now through Thursday July 19th, in the main office of the school. You can also donate a baked good the day of the yard sale, which would be sold that same day. For more information call Theresa Ward at 443-786-3399.
