BERLIN, Md. - From the downtown business renaissance to baseball, the town of Berlin is booming.
"The community has pulled together - I think it's the secret to success in these difficult times where the town , nonprofit's, the business communities, the state - everyone has pulled together," Mayor Gee Williams said.
The 13 and 14-year-old junior league all-stars are heading to the state championships this weekend - in Berlin. It's the first time in history that the town will host the tournament. "It's here at home on our own field which is something that is very rare," Manager Michael Forrest said.
Although they have home field advantage, they face tremendous pressure to come out on top. "Just got to play your hardest. It's your hometown, so you got to win," center fielder Connor Woodland said. "A lot of pressure to perform - big stage in front of all your family and friends. It's the biggest stage we've been on so far," outfielder Sean Colgan said.
The town is anticipating a very large crowd. "It's going to be a great thing for the town both in the short term - we should be attracting between 300 to 400 people to our community, and in the long term, most of those people will be discovering Berlin," Williams said.
An opening ceremony will be held on Saturday at noon. The Berlin boys will play in their first game in the double elimination tournament on Sunday at 5PM.
