SOMERSET COUNTY, Md. -Two cemeteries in Somerset County - both with cracked and very revealing graves, have raised a lot of concern. Skeletal remains, all visible to the naked eye. You may remember, two months ago we reported on the deterioration at Crisfield Cemetery, where at least four graves were cracked open, exposing what's inside. What's more disappointing, it seems as though the cracks and holes in these graves have become a dumping site for beer bottles and other trash.
"It makes me sad, its kind of disrespectful," said a local resident.
So who's in charge? Well, no one right now. Noah Bradshaw, Crisfield City Inspector tells us his mother was apart of the Women's Civic Association, who had previous ownership of the cemetery.
"They've pretty much faded away and we're trying to see if we can get more organizations, but its tough to get people to do things in tough times. So the city is going to jump in and do what it can to fix it up," said Bradshaw.
While we know the city of Crisfield is taking an active role in maintaining the graves, we can't say the same for The Christ United Methodist Church in Deal Island, because none of our calls have been returned. Still after eight months, residents say nothing there has changed.
Officials say mother nature is to blame. Most of these graves are old and have a lot of water damage. Crisfield officials say they expect to begin repairing them soon, but warn it will take some time.
