DAGSBORO, Del. - A 28-year-old Dagsboro man faces first and second degree murder charges for the death of 35-year-old Millsboro mother, Nicole Bennett.
Neighbors admit they occasionally saw Burton out cutting his grass or playing with his kids; never anything out of the ordinary.
"He gave me a hand changing a tire on the car a couple times," recalls Burton's next door neighbor. "Normal guy."
But nothing is normal about the murder charges Burton now faces.
And now that the word is out, neighbors admit they're blown away a registered sex offender lived so close by.
"Yeah, it's bad," says another neighbor who lives 2 doors down from the Burton family. "I didn't know. You got your kids outside and stuff playing, and somebody like that lives next door."
We're told, Burton had two previous arrests.
One for criminal mischief and conspiracy.
The second for endangering the welfare of a child.
Investigators say Burton was the only person with Nicole Bennett at Bay Shore Community Church the night she went missing.
And when police recovered her body in Worcester County crime scene technicians reportedly found DNA on Nicole which matched Burton's.
And police had what they needed to bring him in.
U.S. Marshals followed Burton, his wife Traci, and their two children to A Mcdonalds off of Route 1, just outside of Rehoboth Beach, DE.
Once the family left the restaurant and drove south on Route 1, the team moved in, and took Burton into custody.
The Bennett family tells WMDT they did not know Matthew Burton or his family prior to the murder and arrest.
Burton awaits an extradition hearing in Georgetown, set for August 6th.
But if his lawyers decide to waive that hearing, we're told he could be brought to Maryland sooner.
Once extradited, a Worcester County judge will determine if he can post bond.
