Princess Anne Man Dead and Trooper Injured After Car Chase

Posted: Updated:

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. A driver who refused to stop for police took his own life during a pursuit Friday night in Somerset County - leaving a state trooper and his dog injured.

A Maryland state trooper on West Post Office Road near Beechwood Street in Princess Anne spotted 45-year-old Alvin Melvin driving without a seat belt and attempted to stop him. Melvin refused to stop, leading to a car chase.

Two patrol cars attempted to stop him, but Melvin swerved his car into one of the patrol cars - forcing it into the median. The patrol car then struck several trees, overturned and immediately caught fire. The trooper and his dog were pulled from the vehicle, taken to the hospital and treated and released.

After ramming the police car, Melvin apparently lost control of his car and crashed into a ditch on the slow shoulder of Rt. 13, south of Loretto Road. A 16-year-old passenger got out of the car, but Melvin remained inside and shortly after took his own life.

The 16-year-old male was not charged and released to the custody of his parents. A motive for Melvin's actions is not known at this time. This is an ongoing investigation.
