REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. - There were some serious frightening moments for the man trapped in a sand tunnel Thursday. The 24-year-old Oklahoma resident had dug two six foot holes in the Rehoboth Beach sand and tried to connect them with a tunnel. The whole foundation collapsed leaving him buried alive. According to the Rehoboth Beach Lifeguard Patrol, the man's vital signs showed that time was critical on his survival.
"His face was already blue, he wasn't responding, it looked like he'd passed away but the medics were able to hook up a suction unit, open his airway, clear out the sand and get his breathing back," says Captain Kent Buckson, Rehoboth Beach Lifeguard Patrol.
The victim was treated and released from Beebe Hospital in Lewes. Rehoboth Beach lifeguards encourage beachgoers to fill in all holes that are more than two or three feet deep in the sand.
