SALISBURY, Md. - Next month, Sgt. First Class Bill Cherneski of Maryland will cross the finish line to his 39-year military career. But the 60-year-old Army National Guardsman has another huge goal in his sights. He's on a three-month cross-country journey, all on two wheels.
"My main emphasis is to try and get support for the veterans that can't," said Cherneski.
In April, Cherneski says his dipped his back tire in the Pacific Ocean in Washington State and has been pedaling east, ever since. He has been traveling with very little comfort, but has everything he needs at arm's length.
"I have my sleeping bag, and my mat. I put myself between a 10 to 15 mile stopping point: stop, take a break, hydrate and get some food if I needed," said Cherneski.
Of course he rode right into a few roadblocks between snow, sleet, and hail. However, he made it back to his home-state healthy, happy and accomplished. Oh, and that finish line we told you about, well that's the coastline right on the Atlantic Ocean.
On Friday night, Cherneski will finally be reunited with his wife after three months on the road. Then he's gearing up for his final ride on Saturday, as he completes his journey on 62nd street in Ocean City.
